General Education Transfer Curriculum

The Use, Effectiveness, and Awareness of the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) An Evaluation

May 2000

The Use, Effectiveness, and Awareness of the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) An Evaluation, commissioned by ICAS, assess the degree of use, extensiveness and awareness of IGETC eight years after its adoption. Specifically, the study seeks to determine the extent to which community college transfer students and counseling faculty are satisfied with the option. Through a web-based survey, two questionnaires were administered—one for community college students who transferred to UC or CSU in the fall of 1997, the other was sent to all counseling faculty in the CCC System. Through the responses gathered from these questionnaires, ICAS concluded that the IGETC pattern of lower-division general education requirements is both well-known and preferred among community college transfer students who used it. Students who used the IGETC pattern to transfer to either CSU or UC also expressed a higher satisfaction than students who used other general education transfer patterns.
